Kogi To Build Low Income Houses For Flood Victims, Says Awoniyi

The Deputy Governor of Kogi, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, said on Monday in Lokoja that the government planned to build low-income houses for some flood victims in the state.

Awoniyi told newsmen that the state's Ministry of Lands and Housing had been directed to locate suitable green belt areas within the state for the project.

“We have told them that it has to be a very quick thing,” Awoniyi said.

He said that a team of building professionals had been constituted to draw up simple designs that could be completed within the shortest possible time.

Awoniyi said the state intended to de-congest some areas along the shorelines while new spaces would be opened up.

” Henceforth, building on water line in the state will be discouraged and reserved only for tourism,” he said.

He commended the Federal Government, individuals and organisations that assisted in reducing the hardship inflicted by the flood on the people.

Awoniyi said that those whose houses were submerged had been advised not to rush back into the houses.

He said that until necessary tests were carried out on the houses, no occupant should move into them.

“Those houses have been submerged by water for a period of about four weeks,” Awoniyi said.
