Organisers Say Williams Sisters’ Visit Will Empower Youths

The Managing Director Proctor and Gamble (P&G), Manoj Kumar, on Thursday, described the visit of the Williams sisters, as a shared vision to empower the youth, particularly the girl child.

The ongoing visit has been dubbed “Breaking the mould”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit an initiative of P&G, makers of Always (sanitary pads), in partnership with the tennis stars had been aimed at empowering young women.

Kumar said this in Lagos during the visit of Venus and Serena Williams to the Government College, Ikoyi, as part on events designed to inspire young girl to their potential dreams.

He said the company’s initiative of “Breaking the mould” was a vision shared by both P&G and the Williams sisters.

“The visit is all about breaking the mould. The Williams sisters are very passionate about using their success and their role model opportunity to create hope in lots of children and girls, and youngsters that they can do it.

“So this is the oldest programme and breaking the mould programme of the Williams sisters actually has a common purpose.

“So, of course when we knew that they were coming, this partnership was instantaneous.

“There was nothing to discuss because we both had the same purpose of touching and improving lives and building more confidence in young girls which the always programme does.”

Also Temitope Eluyemi, the Global Government Relations Leader, Sub-Sahara Africa of P&G, stressed that the desire to work with the sisters was to encourage girls.

“The “Breaking the mould” tour is about the Williams sisters, how they achieved greatness through determination, passion and hard work and breaking all sorts of stereotypes to become world class champions today.

“We’ve found the natural fit between the purpose of Always in empowering girls and the purpose of the Williams sisters on the “breaking the mould” tour to also empower girls.

“This is why we see a benefit in joining forces with them at this point in time to encourage girls to live their lives to the fullest.”

The three-day tour is scheduled to end on Friday after an exhibition match between Venus and Serena at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
