The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the prompt response mechanism instituted by the Kogi Government toward handling internally displaced persons in relief camps.
Dr. Brennan Richard, the Director, Emergency Risk Management and Humanitarian Response, gave the commendation on Tuesday, when he paid a courtesy visit to Gov Idris Wada.
Wada was represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi.
Richard said that the health impact associated with the flood could be devastating, if not properly managed.
He said that the WHO was ready to support the state government's health strategy to ensure adequate response to the health challenges caused by the flood.
According to him, the WHO has already ordered the supply of drugs to the state Ministry of Health and commended the staff over the provision of other services to internally displaced persons.
“The settings at most camps in the state visited are very well organised,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Awoniyi, the deputy governor, who represented the governor,? thanked the UN agency for its support.
He noted but for such support, the state government would not have been able to cope with the devastation caused by the flood.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Idris Omede, who led the delegation, said the WHO delegation was in the state to assess the extent of the devastation caused by the flood and thanked the agency for its assistance to the state. (NAN)
