7 Injured As ACN, PDP Loyalists Clash In Ekiti

Hell was yesterday let lose at Irona area of Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti as no fewer than seven persons were reported injured in a bloody clash between supporters of Action Congress of Nigeria (A CN) and Peoples Democratic Party.

Trouble started when loyalists of the former governor of the state, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who celebrated his 52nd birthday on Thursday were pasting posters bearing his picture,with inscription ‘Restoration 2013’ were confronted by some people alleged to be members of A CN.

Posters of Fayose, who was hoping to vie for the 2014 Governorship election in the state were seen pasted in every nooks and crannies of the state capital yesterday morning.

It was gathered that people were divided into two groups to paste the posters. Members of the group seconded to Irona, who gave their names as Ariyo and Laide said that they were accosted by a man while trying to paste the poster.

He said: ‘The house belongs to his mother and we moved to the next building, which is an uncompleted building, as we were about pasting the posters, the same man came forward saying the building is his father’s and we again moved away.

Few minutes after, we saw a crowd of about 25 youths brandishing cutlasses and clubs and other dangerous weapons coming towards our direction and we immediately ran for cover and in the process three of us sustained machete cuts and two were taken to the hospital,” Laide said.

Also confirming the attack, Ariyo, who said he had reported the matter at the Central Police Station in Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, said it was those that were at Irona that was attacked, but there were unconfirmed reports that posters were torn and defaced in other parts of the town.
