Don’t Share These Foods In Public

Blessing Ukemena writes on certain food sharing habits that should be avoided in public when couples chose to display affection for each.

Love can be beautiful, but also messy. It often happens that when couples go out to restaurants, especially those newly in love, they tend to share foods with each other, but there are certain foods that should not be shared in public, as they may become embarrassing. So, this leaves two options, either to eat at home or not feed each other in public.

This is going to get messy. Foods not to feed each other in public or you will end up messy and embarrassed. Have you ever gone to a restaurant with your guy and ordered a milkshake with two straws or one ice cream plate with two spoons? Yes? Well, that's adorable. A milkshake is a nice item to share. Sure, it's cliché, but at least there's no mess.

Anna, who works in a popular fast food place in Abuja told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY that she sees a lot of couples come in and play with their foods in the name of love. In her words, “it is very unbecoming, and highly unattractive”. She says that although she feeds her fiancés at home, she never feeds him anything in public.

She also asserts that she could die of shame if she did such (some people are like that). But what about other foods? Is it romantic to share a snack or to feed each other on dinner? Many would agree that it is a way of showing your love for each other, but others would say that it's gross when couples feed themselves in public, especially when there food is falling down their chest. And there are certain foods that should be termed as unromantic, because they can cause a public nuisance to the couple.

Spaghetti: Eating spaghetti can be a hard work. One can always end up with sauce all over one's face and noodles falling out of the mouth (I'm sure, we are many facing the same predicament). Then, imagine what it would be like to have someone else feeding you this dish. It would most likely end in the restaurant, being cleared out, because the fellow diners are disgusted. The Lady And The Tramp thing is just a fantasy!

Barbecue: One of the fun foods that Nigerian couples love is barbecue. Restaurants with barbecue corners are booming all over Nigeria; proof of this can be seen by just taking a stroll through your neighborhood as from 8pm. Although none of them are romantic, they're certainly delicious.

Nothing is better on a bad day than some good ribs and drinks with friends. However, I'm always embarrassed to even eat that meal in a restaurant. It would be much more preferable to eat it alone, in bed while watching bad TV programme (don't judge). And yet … there are people who do this.

Burgers: There is nothing yummier (and more sinful) than a hot, juicy burger in your own two hands. Did you hear that? Your own two hands! You don't want all of the toppings falling onto your lap: not cute. Also, come on, you guys can feed each other in the privacy of your own home – the other diners (even the couples) don't want to see that kind of stuff!

Soup and swallow: Okay, every Nigerian knows that swallow food such as garri, semo, amala and so on are a must eat from time to time, but feeding each other such foods in public is just disgusting, especially if eaten with “draw” soup. Soup and swallow if not eaten at home should be eaten with extreme care when in public.

You never can tell when some soup may slip down your fingers or cutlery and unto your shirt. No adult should be caught feeding another adult such food in public, please!

So, there you have it. You can make your personal list of such foods to avoid in showing your love. The only food safe for such display is a fruit in a fork.
