Childlessness: Save My Marriage From Collapse, Housewife Begs Court

Ten years ago, high expectations of a blissful marriage and the joy of motherhood were high for Asma’u Ahmed but a decade after, her marriage to Mr. Isaac Ahmed is at the verge of collapse as her husband has approached a Gwagwlada Customary Court, Abuja, seeking for divorce.

Ahmed’s excuse is that his wife is unable to give him??? even a child after 10 years of marriage
An embittered Asma’u from Kogi State and a teacher with the Federal Government College, Kwali, Abuja, told the court that the fault was not hers because her husband had been medically confirmed to having “chronic low sperm count.”

Notwithstanding Mr. Ahmed’s state of health, Asma’u said she still revered him as her husband and would want to continue with the marriage.

She therefore prayed the court to refuse Ahmed’s application to divorce her on ground of childlessness. Asma’u told the court that she got married to Ahmed, a native of Benue State on October 26, 2002 but could not have a child in the first two years of the marriage. The development she claimed, forced them to seek medical attention, where it was discovered that her husband had “chronic low sperm count” and thereafter went for an operation at her expense.

She said despite the operation, they still did not have a child for another eight years. She said “Though my husband was showing some strange behaviour, we were still leaving together peacefully. Throughout this period, I was the one fending for the family until I assisted him to get a job in the Secondary Education Board.”?? Asma’u alleged that in November 2011, her husband said he would no longer have sex with her except with a condom.

When Ahmed saw that his wife accepted the proposal in good faith, he went for a shocker saying he wanted a divorce.

“I asked him if he told his friends that he is medically responsible for our woes, to which he gave me no answer. While hoping that the situation will change, he approached the court for a divorce. I am against divorce on any ground,” she added. The matter has? been adjourned to December 17, 2012 for further hearing.
