The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has condemned the armed attack on several towns in the Central African Republic by the coalition of rebel groups “SELEKA”.
This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday in New York by Ban’s spokesman, Martin Nesirky.
Ban noted that the development had gravely undermined the peace agreements in place and the efforts of the international community to consolidate peace in Central African Republic.
The secretary-general regretted the loss of lives as well as the displacement of the population caused by the fighting.
He however, welcomed the conclusions of the Summit of the Heads of State of the Economic Community of the Central African States (ECCAS) held in Ndjamena on Dec.? 21.
Ban also urged all parties to abide by the decisions of the Summit which provided a basis for a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
He appealed to all parties to refrain from any acts of violence against civilians, including sexual and gender-based violence.
Ban also called on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and to respect human rights in conformity with international instruments to which the Central African Republic is a party.
The secretary-general also reminded the Government of the Central African Republic of its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and its premises.
He confirmed the readiness of the UN to continue to support the Central African Republic in overcoming challenges to the consolidation of peace, in collaboration with regional and international partners
