Bayelsa SUBEB Re-employs 152 Sacked Teachers

152 out of the 400 teachers sacked last year by the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) over alleged irregularities in their employment were, yesterday, re-employed after due application, interview and proper employment letters.

The 400 teachers were last year relieved of their appointment by SUBEB following the discovery of faulty processes of employment and fraud in the system of salary payment by some staff.

Also sacked were non-academic staff of the Primary School board.
Confirming the development to newsmen, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Comrade Walton Liverpool, said that though the board has washed its hands off the cases of non-academic staff, the re-employment of the 152 staff of the board was a decision to encourage the genuine process of employment of teachers in the state.

Liverpool, however, noted that those re-employed were not entitled to any arrears of salary or allowances as teachers due to their involvement in a faulty employment scam in the state, “no arrears will be paid to them because they were illegal employees and so didn’t have records anywhere in the board. No files and nothing to show that they were teachers in the state.”
