EFCC Rearrests Akingbola, Appears In Court Today

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) said it had rearrested the former managing director of Intercontinental Bank Plc (now Access Bank Plc), Mr Erastus Akingbola.

In a tpress statement released to the media yesterday, the EFCC stated that Mr. Akingbola “is currently being held at the commission’s facility in Ikoyi, Lagos, preparatory to his arraignment tomorrow (today) February 26, 2013 before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos High Court on fresh charges of stealing.”

LEADERSHIP recalls that Akingbola’s case before a Lagos High Court was stalled following the elevation of the then presiding judge, Justice Habeeb Abiru, to the Court of Appeal last year.

On October 22, 2012, Justice Abiru adjourned the trial of Akingbola till November 15, 2012 for adoption of final address. The development took his power to continue presiding over the cases at the Lagos High Court. More so, once a criminal trial is transferred to another judge, such case must start de novo (afresh).

The statement further stated that Akingbola will be arraigned on? fresh fraud charges before another Lagos High Court judge.
