NAICOM, NGO Partner On Compulsory Insurance

The National Insurance Commission, (NAICOM ), has engaged the services of a Non-Governmental Organisation, Fire Safety and Environment Surveillance of Nigeria (FSESN) to ensure a compulsory insurance implementation in the country.

Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna, the Commissioner-general of the NGO, Alhaji Umar Umar Macima said that the deal was sealed when he visited the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Fola Daniel in his office in Abuja.

He disclosed that the insurance boss delved into the area of awareness and the enforcement of the law and said that “if the public is aware of the compulsory insurance policy law, the implication of non-compliance, the gains, the categories of those affected among others, then the enforcement will follow”.

Also Daniel the NGO that for the industry to be able to meet set targets, there was need for various task forces to be set up and empowered to enforce compliance with different rules by affected individuals and corporate bodies.

“Before now, the Federal Government had been advised to set up a task force charged with the enforcement of the compulsory insurances.

Alternatively, it was asked to empower NAICOM to ensure that individuals, government and corporate bodies comply with compulsory insurances”, Maccina added
The commissioner-general added that the Insurance Commissioner was interested in the full implementation of the act and said that the only way forward in this regard is to set up enforcement committees or task forces for each of the compulsory insurances under reference.

“The industry has for long muted the idea of equipping the Police to identify fake motor vehicle insurance certificates by logging the vehicle’s plate number into hand-held computer hardware. This is the time for this to be done to achieve maximum results,” he stated .

Macima disclosed that his NGO would organise awareness workshop for all stake holders which include motor parks, market women and men, religious worship places, traditional rulers to be able to get to the grassroots.
