NIPOST Tasks LGAs On House Numbering, Street Naming

Mr Afolabi Aina, the Area Postal Manager in Jigawa on Tuesday urged local government areas in the state to conduct house numbering in their respective areas to enhance its operations.

Aina also called for proper naming and labeling of roads and streets in major towns across the 27 LGAs in the state.

Aina made the call at a news conference to mark the 2012 World Postal Day celebration in Dutse.

He said that lack of house numbers in residential quarters and street naming were the major obstacles militating against smooth operation of the agency.

“Non-naming of streets and house numbering are making delivery difficult and costly.

“We are also facing challenges due to lack of renewal of Post Office Box and Private Mail Bag by government agencies and departments,” Aina said.

The manager said that renewal of mail boxes would enable the agency to serve communities better.

According to him, the agency has introduced new services to cope with the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and meet the demands of the society.

He said that the agency had started freight and haulage services, internet café, post-cash online electronic money transfer, stamp duty and post code directory.

“Postal market is dynamic and needs to be changed to keep pace with ICT development. We place emphasis on corporate mailers and post cash transfer services.

“Post cash money transfer is effective and it serves those in rural areas better,” he added.

Aina said that the agency generated N9.5 million as internal revenue in the last financial year, representing 90 per cent improvement. (NAN)
