EDO JAIL BREAK: Contradiction Trails Police, Prison Controller’s Investigations

The Edo Controller of Prisons, Jimoh Ewulu, has said only 8 inmates escaped when gunmen invaded the detention facility located in Oko Community, a suburb of the state capital, in the early hours of Sunday morning, just as he dismissed that the escape was masterminded by inmates against media reports.

Ewulo told LEADERSHIP yesterday that there was a wide opening at the toilet wall which they suspected a device was used to create the hole adding that it was still been investigated.

“We believe that a device was used to create the hole but whether it was explosive or not is yet to be ascertained. No casualty was recorded as we were able to repress some of the inmates that attempted to escape,” he said.

However, at a news briefing yesterday, the Edo Commissioner of Police, Olayinka Balogun, told Journalists that only two prison inmates who earlier escaped through holes bored from within the prison were re-arrested.

He said men of the police command were drafted to the prisons after receiving a distress call from Oko Prisons official, adding that patrol team from Airport division was immediately dispatched to the scene.

He further assured that the situation had been put under control as security around the prisons facility had been intensified.

Meanwhile, residents around the prisons have called on security agents to comb the neighborhood over fear that some of the escaped inmates might be taking refuge in the bushes around the areas.?
