Mazembe chase second Super Cup

26 January 2011

TP Mazembe will look to further entrench their reputation as the dominant force of African club competition when they host FUS Rabat in the CAF Super Cup on Saturday in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

The reigning African champions, who claimed a second successive African Champions League title last year and became the first team from the continent to reach the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, are looking to win the Super Cup for a second successive year.

In 2010, the DR Congo side defeated Stade Malien of Mali 2-0 to win the tournament, which pits the holders of the Champions League and Confederation Cup against one another in a one-off match.

This time around their opponents are FUS Rabat of Morocco, who defeated CS Sfaxien of Tunisia to win the Confederation Cup last year. It is the first time that teams from the DRC and Morocco are meeting in the Super Cup.

A victory for Mazembe would put them tie-third on the all-time winners list for the Super Cup. Al Ahly of Egypt top the rankings with four victories, while Cairo rivals Zamalek have claimed it three times.

Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) and Enyimba (Nigeria) have both won it twice, while Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), ASEC Mimosas (Cote dIvoire), Orlando Pirates (South Africa), Africa Sports (Cote dIvoire), Esperance (Tunisia) and Mazembe have won it once apiece.
