Giants drawn together in UCL

18 March 2011

The draw for the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals have thrown up some incredible ties, with perhaps the pick being the all_English clash between Chelsea and Manchester United.

It is a repeat of the 2008 final, which United won on penalties, but this time the teams meet over two legs for a place in the semifinals.

The third English side still in the competition, Tottenham Hotspur, face the daunting task of a meeting with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Defending champions Inter Milan will play German side Schalke, a tie they would expect to win against a Schalke side who have blown hot and cold this season, but more towards the cold.

The fourth quarterfinals sees Barcelona take on Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk, arguably the weakest of the eight remaining sides.

The quarterfinal first legs will be staged on April 5/6, while the second legs will be played on April 12/13.

Meanwhile, the draw has also been made for the semifinals, with the winner of the tie between Real Madrid and Tottenham taking Barcelona or Shakhtar Donetsk in a potentially explosive Last 4 encounter.

The neutral will certainly be hoping for a Barca-Real semi and the possibility of that looks high.

The other semifinal will therefore be between Inter Milan or Schalke and Chelsea or Manchester United.

The semifinal first legs will be staged on April 26/27, with the second legs on May 3/4.

The final of the UEFA Champions League will be played on Saturday, May 28 at Wembley Stadium in London.
