‘Textile fund cannot solve industry’s problems’

Chika Onuegbu,
chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State, says the
N200 billion textile fund released by the federal government to revive
textile industries will not solve the sector’s problems.

Mr Onuegbu told the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Port Harcourt that there
were many problems confronting the industry that had not been resolved.

According to him,
revival of the sector needs holistic view of many issues, including the
country’s porous borders. “What is needed to reactivate the textile
industry is a holistic review of all factors responsible for their
closure,” he said.

The labour leader
said that the country’s borders were porous with all kinds of
foreign-made clothes entering the country unchecked.
