The Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Ranti Akerele, has raised an alarm over plans to assassinate him.

The commissioner
at a news conference in Akure yesterday, alleged that a senator from
the state was the brain behind the assassination plot.

Mr Akerele’s
allegation is coming a week after he was allegedly slapped by a Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) leader at Ido-Ani in Ose Local Government Area
of the state during the state assembly election.

He alleged that the said senator had offered his killers a sum of N10 million to get rid of him.

Mr Akerele
explained that he got information about the plan to get rid of him via
a letter brought by a man to his office. He was, however, silent on the
identity of the person who brought the letter to his office.

He said: “The
informant in the letter disclosed that the attack which was discussed
at a meeting held in Ibadan, was to be carried out on a Sunday. “I have
reported the case at the Ondo State Police Command, specifically, I
have reported the matter to the Commissioner of Police and the director
of State Security Services (SSS) on the matter.

Call to the police

“The police must
rise up and ensure those planning to kill me are exposed. I quickly
cried out to the public because many people have been killed in the
past with no clue to unravel those who carried out the operations.

“If the police
have failed to bring to justice those who killed late Bola Ige, who was
then the Attorney General of the Federation, who am I not to raise
alarm because prevention is better than cure?

“I want to remain
alive. I want to continue to render services to the good people of the
state. I have children and I don’t want my wife to be a widow at this
age.” Confirming the complaint, the State Police Command spokesperson,
Adeniran Aremu, said the police are investigating the matter to verify
the veracity of the commissioner’s claim.
