Nigeria Needs Help Over Displaced People – UN

The United Nations has said that Nigeria needs help in order to? address? the humanitarian situations arising from internally displaced people in some states of the federation.

This was disclosed yesterday by the UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Valerie Amos, when she visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.

She said, “my coming fulfils a three-fold mission. Firstly, is to discuss with the Nigerian government with the respect to the humanitarian situations facing Nigeria and look for areas in which we can strengthen our partnership.

“Secondly, it is in recognition of Nigeria’s role in the region and in the world in promoting peace and security. Thirdly, it is to give support to the ECOWAS [Economic Community Of West African States] conference on internally displaced people held in Nigeria as part of the Kampala [capital of Uganda] Convention.”

Amos said that Nigeria deserved commendation for its peacekeeping efforts and in maintaining stability in the region.
