NAICOM Pledges Support For NESG Summit

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has expressed its support for the organisers of the 2011 summit of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).

The Commissioner for Insurance, Fola Daniel, gave the assurance on behalf of the Commission, when a delegation of the NESG 2011 summit Organising Committee, led by Dr. Abdu Garba, from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and member of the committee, visited him in his office.

Daniel said he was pleased with the management of the NESG in their efforts to advance the economic frontiers of the country.
He commended the quality of previous summits and said he hoped that, this year will not be less.

NAICOM participated fully at the summit for the first time last year even though a representative of the Commission had always headed the finance sub-committee.

Earlier in his remark, Dr. Garba said the aim of the visit was to intimate the Commission of the forthcoming summit and also use the opportunity to seek financial support.

This year’s summit, initially scheduled to kick off September 6, 2011, according to Garba, had to be shifted to November 8 to 10, 2011 at the instance of President Goodluck Jonathan who was outside the country on official engagement at the time.

He also said the President believes a good economic blue-print could be derived from this year’s summit and has directed the Vice President, Alhaji Namadi Sambo, to ensure that recommendations from the summit were religiously implemented.

He said the President would want the recommendations from the summit captured in the 2012 budget to make implementation easier.
In his own remark, Mr. Endurance Uhumuavbi, of the NESG Secretariat, expressed his appreciation to NAICOM for previous support to the group and hoped for better cooperation going forward.

He also said the NESG was proposing a National Policy Dialogue on Insurance as part of measures to sensitise the public on the need to embrace insurance and urged NAICOM cooperate with the NESG in this regard.
