Nigeria assumes UN Security Council Presidency

The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Saturday, 1st October, 2011, begun the rotational presidency of the United Nations Security Council, making it the second time she will become the rotational president of the 15-member body.

LEADERSHIP gathered that though the programme is still being discussed by all the members of the Security Council, Nigeria will preside over its affairs for the month of October.

It would be recalled that Nigeria presided over the Security Council in July last year, through the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Prof. Joy Ogwu.
Significantly, Nigeria is assuming the Security Council’s Presidency at a time in which the country is celebrating her 51st year of independence.

Meanwhile, the Security Council had referred Palestine’s ?application to become a United Nations Member State to the committee responsible for the admission of new members.
The Council’s decision to refer the application came almost a week after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the application to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who then forwarded it to the 15-member body.
The Council’s committee responsible for the admission of new members is slated to consider the application on Friday.?

Any application for UN membership is considered by the Council, which decides whether or not to recommend admission into the 193-member ?General Assembly, which has to adopt a resolution for the admission of a Member State.?
