Jonathan Tasks State Govts On Teacher Education

President Goodluck Jonathan has encouraged state governments on the need to devise meaningful strategies to promote the education of teachers in their various states and local governments, especially in rural areas where the deployment of teachers stands as a challenge.?

President Jonathan stated this during the celebration of World Teachers’ Day in Abuja Wednesday. The president, who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, encouraged teachers to work diligently and uphold the profession which he described as noble.

He disclosed that education was top priority for the government and the nation, especially as Nigeria was known and recognized for its contributions in all facets of life among the comity of nations and, as such, ‘it behooves on us that contribution to nation development rests on all’.

He revealed that their effort was appreciated and could be seen especially in the Almajiri system of education which the federal government had invested in and was already progressing steadily in its second stage.?
Concerning the theme for the celebration, ‘Teachers For Gender Equality’, the president said that the theme was apt in view of gender-related issues that affects the education sector.?

He eulogized the contribution of women in the profession, and noted that ‘even the winner of the best teacher of the year award is a woman, no wonder’.?
He further said the theme ‘is not only women-centred but also involved men as many women are known to be educated and are competing favourably with their male counterparts in all sectors of the economy, and there was need to channel energy towards education programmes and in other spheres of life.
