Trafic Congestion, As Flood Takes Over Lagos Again

There was? a serious traffic snarl-up in some parts of Lagos State yesterday following torrential rains that lasted for hours.? Motorists who groaned in the traffic were seen trying to manoeuvre through the flood that took over major roads in the metropolis.

? Most of the residents who lamented their ordeal at various spots, as monitored by LEADERSHIP, appealed to the governor of the state,? Babatunde Fashola,? to come to their aid, saying that many of them had already lost their life savings to the flood which constantly displaced them any time it rained.

Some of the worst-hit areas visited by LEADERSHIP include Mobil Filling Station, Ogba, where? some vehicles were submerged in flood and Odejobi Street off Iju Road in Agege area of the state.

Our correspondent also gathered that many residents were adversely affected by the flood in? Badia areas of Apapa –Iganmu? area , Orile-Agege area, while the? Iyana-Ipaja end of Abeokuta-Lagos were highly flooded.

The flood, LEADERSHIP learnt, also affected high brow areas like Ikoyi and Victoria Island where roads and premises were submerged in the flood, trapping both the occupants of the buildings indoors .

?General Manager,? Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Osanyintolu, said the state government had put in place measures to curtail and manage the disaster.

He added the state government is already building new relief camp at Igando that can accommodate thousands of victims, urging Lagosians to be safety conscious in all they are doing.

“Although nobody prays for disaster in the state but as emergency management agency, we are taking proactive measure to reduce impact of any disaster. The state government under the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola is already embarking on construction of a bigger, better relief camp that can accommodate more people. The new relief camp has a helipad and other facilities,” he said.

? In the same vein the Lagos state Commissioner for Environment Mr. Tunji Bello had also allayed fears of the residents , saying the state government had de-silted the major canals and drainage channels in the state for the water to flow through.

? He said the flooding currently experience in the state anytime it rains is flash flooding which he assured would recede after the rains subsides.
