The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, has attributed the high rate of road crashes in the city to the poor driving attitude of drivers and indiscipline.
The minister said this yesterday when he flagged-off the? 2011 edition of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC’s) “Operation Sanity” at Kaura District yesterday.
He urged security agencies in the FCT to synergise and put in place stiffer penalties for road traffic law violators, with a view to instilling discipline on the roads.
“On our part as a responsive government, we shall continue in the pursuit of a multi-model transport system to ease the pressure on the roads as well as the actualisation of the on going efforts to provide an efficient mass transport scheme through the railway services”.
He lamented that despite government’s huge investment in the provision of pedestrian bridges, pedestrians in the FCT hardly made use of these facilities, just as most motorists preferred to park their cars indiscriminately instead of the designated locations.
Senator Mohammed assured that the FCT administration would continue to place premium on the development of road infrastructure in the federal capital city as evident in the massive road reconstruction, rehabilitation and dualisation works going on in the capital city.
Speaking earlier, the corps marshal and chief executive of the FRSC, Mr Osita Chidoka, had said “Operation Sanity” was an attempt to redress the ugly traffic problems in and around the FCT to reduce avoidable waste of human lives and property.
He stated that the FRSC had trained 350 officers to specifically embark on this special operation which was intended to be 24 hours, to redress all traffic anomalies.
