Reps Probe Selective Award Of Contracts

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Federal Character to investigate alleged lopsidedness in the award of contracts for federal government projects across the country.

The decision was reached after the House adopted the resolution of a motion moved by Hon. Karimi Sunday (Kogi State) entitled “Lopsidedness in the Award of Federal Government Projects” yesterday.

Basing his argument on a recent report in a national daily (not LEADERSHIP), Sunday had said that federal government projects were spread unevenly with 86 per cent representing N760 billion going to the South-South alone, while the North-Central got zero allocation.

Sunday said this was a breach of the Federal Character Act and called for an investigation to determine the truth or otherwise of the allegation.

The committee is expected to report to the House in two weeks.
Similarly, the House has also mandated its committee on States and Local Governments to investigate the alleged extortion of road users by some local government officials on federal roads.
The lawmakers who passed a motion on the illegal collection of taxes and levies on federal roads by some local governments yesterday also urged the inspector-general of police, Hafiz Ringim, to rid the federal highways of the tax collectors.
