Kano To Computerise LGA Operations, Train Staff

Kano State government has announced it readiness to computerise all operations of the local government areas as part of its efforts to reinvigorate its service for efficient and effective performance.

A press release signed by an assistance director, Mr Usman Bello, from the office of the deputy governor and made available to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND yesterday stated that the deputy governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who doubled as the commissioner for Local Government (LG) declared during a workshop on enhancing revenue generation and collection in the local government that the state government will soon embark on computer training of local government workers in the state in order to achieve results.

According to Ganduje, the state government recognised the strategic position of the LG administration as closest to the grassroots and has therefore taken steps to enhance its services for better performance, adding that in view of the dwindling economic situation in the country, it is imperative for the LGs to focus more on enhancing their internally generated revenue.

He lamented the current revenue income situation of LGs which depends largely on the monthly allocation from the federal government without which the system becomes virtually ineffective.

The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Local Government in its efforts to support the LGs and to empower its operators with knowledge on efficient strategies and practices of revenue generation.

Also speaking at the briefing, the chief consultant of KWAKAF international,? Raphael Ogbu, an engineer, said? he was happy that what his organisation did in some African countries, particularly in Ghana and some states in Nigeria, was being replicated in Imo State.

He said, ‘’Our organisation, in partnership with the Imo State government, hopes that the programme would help youths from the state develop in all spheres of human endeavour, so that at the end they would be good ambassadors of not only Imo but the nation at large.

“Ghana is among the countries in West Africa that have benefitted from the services we are offering Imo State, In Nigeria. Over 200 youths from three states have equally benefitted from this, while among them, more than 185 have been engaged in several labour organisations. Thanks to the contacts and links they developed during their internship programme abroad.
