Seal: Soul And R&B Sensation

Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel was born February 19, 1963 to a Brazilian plumber, Francis Samuel and a Nigerian wig maker, Adebisi Samuel in Paddington, England.

The British Soul and R&B singer became famous after the release of his hit single, Kiss from a rose which was also used as sound track for the 1995 movie,

Batman Forever. Kiss From a Rose in 1995, became no 1 on US charts and not only did the success of this track earn Seal an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film (1995), but it also won him three Grammys at the 1996 Grammys for Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year categories.

Though left-handed and with facial scarring from Lupus since childhood, Seal is a hard-worker. While growing up with foster parents in the City of Westminster in inner London, he took various jobs, including working at McDonald’s, designing leather clothing and electrical engineering before entering his musical voyage. His musical career began from singing in clubs after which he joined several bands beginning in Britain and moving on to join others in Asia.

In 1991, Seal’s first album titled Seal 1991 was released. It contained the smash hit Crazy which immediately ranked 2nd in the UK charts. The single was later covered by heavy metal band, Mushroomhead, for their 2003 album XIII. Seal continued to create a national profile. He started recording his second album. In between the albums, he took the part on the Jimi Hendrix’s tribute album, Stone Free and was singing on Jeff Beck’s version of Manic Depression. Later in 1994, his second album, Seal 1994, was put on sale. It enjoyed a worldwide success and after the third single, Kiss from a Rose was utilized as the soundtrack of Batman Forever, both the album and the single won the 1996 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year respectively.

Music career aside, Seal was at some point romantically linked to supermodel, Tyra Banks. But they separated and the failed relationship, however, inspired the singer to write a single he titled When A Man is Wrong, taken from his 1998 album, Human Being, which is based on their break-up. The album received a Gold record certification by RIAA in January 1999.

A fourth album, Seal IV, was released two years later to a more acceptable reception. Singles pulled from the record include Waiting for You, Get It Together and Love’s Divine with the latter gaining the biggest attention in Europe. It wasn’t long that a greatest hits compilation was prepared for a release titled, ‘Best: 1991-2004.’ The album was dropped in 2004 sporting his hits and several cover songs. He was then involved with Tatjana Patitz, also a supermodel. Seal at last dedicated his love only for his future wife, Heidi Klum. The pair tied the knot on May 10th, 2005 and happily welcomed their first son, Henry Gunther Ademola Dashtu Samuel, on September 12th in the same year and later embracing their second, Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel, on November 22nd, 2006.

In 2007, he released another album, System, which he describes as more dance oriented. In one of the tracts, Wedding day, Seal sings a duet with his wife. He has also done some duet with other musicians’ one of them being will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas. He appeared on the American Idol season 7 Finale, singing with third-place contestant, Syesha Mercado.????
