The Niger State government has entered another phase of the beatification and infrastructural development of the state capital, awarding a contract for the streetlight on eastern bye-pass, Minna at the cost of N268.7 million.
The contract award ceremony, which was performed yesterday at the conference hall of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development, Minna, by the commissioner of the??? ministry, Dr Ibrahim Sule Babamini is to be completed within six months.
Babamini, while speaking at the ceremony, also stated that the contracting firm, Kenol Nigeria Limited had given the government a four-year guarantee for maintenance on the materials to be used.
He said, “The contract is an installation of a solar-powered streetlight. We decided to use solar because the United Nations has been encouraging countries to use the low carbon emission method in generating power because of global warming.”
The commissioner said though the solar system was more capital intensive, test-running the method conducted by the same firm over three years in the state has shown that it was the easiest method in terms of maintenance and durability.
He said contract for the same solar system was awarded for the western bye- pass and was revoked, but expressed the confidence that the firm which was awarded that of the eastern bye- pass has proven to have the technical know-how to deliver a better work in line with the vision of the state.
Representative of the firm, James Yemi Adewunmi in his acceptance speech, promised to deliver in accordance with the contract specification, while urging the government to assist the firm through prompt release of funds to perform as required.
