Juvenile Gets 18-Month Jail Term For Housebreaking, Theft

A 14-year-old, Yusuf Mohammed of Bindigari ward Damaturu in Yobe State has been sentenced on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, shop-breaking and attempt to commit an offence of theft; offences punishable under sections 97, 355, 95 of the penal Code Law.

As contained in the case file No. YBS/DT/SMC II/253c/2011, the accused, with another, Adamu, now at large, were charged to court for burgling the shop of one Raiyamu Adamu of Abacha ward, along Gashua road, Damaturu, where the said owner sells handsets and its accessories. Although the accused Yusuf was caught, but the said Adamu of Sabon Pegi ward in Damaturu escaped.

When the police First Information report was read out to him before the court, the Yusuf pleaded guilty to the charges against him, but asked for leniency.

Before delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Abubakar Bukar Kagu recalled that the same 14- year-old man is standing trial on a similar offence of vandalising armored cables belonging to the PHCN substation at Ali Marami ward in Damaturu estimated to cost N6.061, 000.00.

The presiding judge while delivering his judgment,warned the culprit to avoid committing another offence that could bring him before the court.

He therefore convicted him on the three count charges and sentenced him to six months imprisonment for the offence of conspiracy, nine months for house breaking and three months for attempt to commit offence of theft.
