Lagos May Ban Okada In 2012

Indications have emerged that Lagos State Government may ban the use of commercial motorcycles, also known as Okada, in the ever busy metropolis in the New Year.

Submitting its report to the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola,? at the Ikeja Lagos State House yesterday, the Chairman of the Lagos? Security Committee, Mr. Olusegun Kazeem, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, said the grave consequences of allowing operation of Okada in the Lagos metropolis far outweighed the advantages .

The committee which was reconstituted by the governor to look into the worrisome menace of commercial motorcyclists, observed that its purpose in the state is not officially recognized mode of transportation , noting that it was allowed as a result of social economic challenges in the country.

Kazeem lamented that most of the Okada riders who he said are illegal immigrants without data , roof over their heads constituted nuisance in the state and made their operation impossible to regulate .
