Policemen, Others Protest In Lagos Over Subsidy Removal

Some officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos have joined in the protest against fuel subsidy removal.

LEADERSHIP gathered that no less than 300 policemen joined the march from Oregun to Alausa, the seat of government in Lagos. The policemen were chanting anti-government slogans and carrying arms.

Thousands of Lagos residents also trooped out en masse to protest the decision.

Coming under the auspices of the Joint Action Front, a coalition of Labour and Civil Society, protesters staged a walk from the former national headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress in? Yaba area of the state through the busy Ikorodu road, chanting various slogans denouncing the move.

Though most business outlets remained under lock and key, protesting residents, led by Ganiat, the wife of the late human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi, former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Femi Falana, blocked the major highway demanding a reversal of policy.

Other leading lights of the protest march included former national chairman of ASUU, Dr. Fashina and secretary of the front, Mr. Biodun Aremu.
