AMAC Seeks Release Of Wuse, Garki Markets To Council

The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Micah Jiba, has called on the authority of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to release Wuse and Garki Markets to the council for management.

The chairman stated this at a press conference in Abuja, on the progress made by the council last year.

The council’s supervisory councillor for special duties, Mr. Alex Ebim, who spoke on behalf of the chairman, said the call for the release of the markets, which are sources of revenue to the council, became necessary as most of the means of internal revenue that the council used to boast of had been lost to the authorities of the FCT.

He further said the council needed to take urgent steps as if such development continues, it had the capacity of truncating the internal developments taking place in the council.

Speaking further, Ebim also sought for the release of the park and pay policy to the council, in addition to the markets, as the constitution had made the administration of such areas on the area councils.

“AMAC is one of the area councils as far as the administration of the FCT is
concerned. We thank the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed for restoring the rights of land allocation to council chairmen and we pray that such gestures be extended to revenue generation ventures especially in the areas of markets and parks.

“At least such activities can be carried out in conjunction with area councils whom should be allowed to take up to 70 per cent of such derived revenue.”
