A human rights activist in Kogi State, Mr. Idris Miliki, has called for more protests throughout the country to compel President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind his decision on? fuel subsidy.
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP in Lokoja yesterday, the activist? said the action of President? Jonathan was a betrayal of the trust reposed on him by Nigerians, who gave him their mandate in April, last year.
Miliki, who is the Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, pointed out that the removal of the subsidy by the President, despite the people’s outcry, was against the social contract he signed with the Nigerian people.
He further decried the inability of the Federal Government to address the critical issues affecting the economy,which led to the removal of the subsidy.
He therefore called on all Nigerian workers, civil society organizations and the National Assembly to challenge what he described as? anti – people policy of the government.
The activist equally? enjoined security agencies to exercise restraint as Nigerians come together to fight for their rights, stressing that the controversial policy affected everybody.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in major towns across the state, following the protest that took everybody unawares at the state capital on Tuesday.
Mobile policemen now man strategic areas in Lokoja and other towns, as Nigerians continue to take to the streets to protest the removal of fuel subsidy.
