Fuel Subsidy: Students Declare 7 Day Protest In Bauchi

As the controversy surrounding the removal of subsidy on fuel continues to elicit reactions from all over the country, students in Bauchi State under the auspices of the National Union of Bauchi State Students [NUBASS] yesterday commenced a seven day protest.

This, the students said, was geared towards highlighting their feelings against what they described as ‘War against the poor’.

This was even as they gave the government 48 hours to reverse itself on the decision or face the wrath of the students.

The protest, which started as early as 9am was joined by the State chapter of the Arewa Students Forum, Students Union Governments of all the tertiary institutions in the State, okada and keke NAPEP riders and many other youths.

The demonstrators who went round through Government House, State secretariat and the palace of the Emir, caused traffic difficulties in the metropolis.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP, the NUBASS President, comrade Bashir Maji, said that the demonstration would continue until President Goodluck Jonathan reversed his action and added that they were giving the government 48 hours to respond, otherwise he will continue to face the wrath of the Nigerian masses.

The students Leader who described the president’s action as unprecedented and detestable called on the Nigeria Labour congress, all trade unions and pressure groups in the country to continue to react until government sees reason to rescind ‘this obnoxious policy.’
