Alleged Robbery Lands Three Ex-Convicts In Prison

An Akure Chief Magistrates’? Court on Tuesday ordered that three ex-convicts brought before it for? alleged armed robbery be remanded in prison custody.

Chief? Magistrate Akin Akintoye gave the order when Ajibola Aliu, 53; Kayode Owoeye, 56 and Ayodele Omodara, 54,? appeared before him on a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

According to the statements they made to the police, Aliu was released from prison in October having served a jail term of? 21 years.

Owoeye had also served three months in prison while Omodara had done two years in jail for various criminal offences.

The accused persons were alleged to have committed the offence on Dec.? 28, 2011 at about 12.45 p.m at No. 7, Stadium Road, Akure.

The offence, according to the police prosecutor, ASP Amos Ifedayo,? was contrary to and punishable under section 6 (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act cap R II Laws of the Federation 2004.

The accused were alleged to have? robbed Abubakar Issa, Gbenga Oyewole, Adisa Abdulahi and Yemisi Jimoh of? their money as well as? other valuable properties.

Items stolen by the accused include the sum of? N49, 000, a wrist watch valued at N3, 000 and one handbag valued at N1,000.

Others include one Tecno handset valued at N7, 000 and one female hand bag valued at N4, 500,? all totaling N66,700.

The accused told the court that they understood the charges when they were read to them in English.

Their plea was not, however,? taken while the prosecutor urged the court to remand them in prison custody pending the receipt of? legal advice from the Director of? Public Prosecution (DPP).

Ifedayo told the court that the case file had? already been duplicated and would be forwarded to the DPP.

Akintoye, in his ruling,? ordered the accused to? be remanded in prison custody while? adjourning the matter to Feb.? 15 for? mention. (NAN)
