Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambers, Secretary General, African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP-Group) on Sunday endorsed the candidature of Nigeria’s Aisha Abdullahi, for the post of Commissioner for Political Affairs of the AU Commission.
Chambers, in an endorsement letter made available to some correspondents in Addis Ababa, described Abdullahi as the best candidate for the post considering her vast experience in solving the political crisis in Guinea as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the country.
“I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know and work with Her Excellency Dr Aisha Laraba Abdullahi during the Guinean transition as she was the ambassador of Nigeria to Guinea.
“She worked closely with the ECOWAS Office in Conakry and provided leadership to the ECOWAS Group of Ambassadors there’’, Chambers said.
Chambers, a former Ghana’s deputy foreign minister, said during the crisis, Abdullahi was accessible to the Guinean “Forces Vives’’ and was clearly a source of inspiration and encouragement to them in their legitimate aspirations to install democracy and constitutional rule in their country for which she was greatly admired.
He stressed that if voted to the post, Abdullahi would bring to the AU Commission “a brilliant academic background, quick grasp of issues, a result-oriented and practical approach to challenges.
“She is strongly committed to the democratic ideals of respect for rule of law, human rights, gender, justice, equity, transparency and a fair distribution of socio-economic wealth for the benefit of all,” Chambers said.
Chambers added that he was optimistic Abdullahi would be “a proud, creative and resourceful addition to the AU Commission’’.
Abdullahi, the Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Guinea, is vying for the post with six other candidates including Ms Genevieve Tsegah, from Ghana.
