Bayelsa Guber: Declare Me PDP Candidate, Sylva Tells S’Court

Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva has requested the Supreme Court to declare him the lawful standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in the State.

The Governor made this appeal, yesterday, when he approached the Supreme Court as cross-appellant in the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

He insisted that he won the original primary election conducted by the party in January, 2011, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC].

The Federal High Court in Abuja had ruled that it has jurisdiction over dispute arising from the candidacy of a political party.

Sylva had earlier gone to the Federal High Court, seeking to stop the PDP from conducting any fresh primary election to produce a new nominee to run the gubernatorial race on the account that his nomination was subsisting, valid and lawful having won the January, 2011 primary election and his name consequently forwarded to INEC as PDP’s standard bearer.
