The Anambra Police Command on Friday dismissed Cpl.? Samuel Ojana, who allegedly shot and killed a commercial bus driver, Edwin Eze, in Onitsha after an orderly room trial.
Ojana reportedly carried out the act on Thursday after the driver allegedly refused give him a N20 bribe.
The killing subsequently sparked violent protests that swept through the commercial city.
Meanwhile, an Onitsha Chief Magistrate Court, presided over by Dr. Ngozi Okoye, has ordered that Ojana be remanded in the custody of Onitsha prisons.
Ojana was charged with murder, assault and causing threat to public peace.
In her ruling, Okoye said that the accused would be remanded in prison since the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case.
“The case would be transferred to the state High Court for further hearing,” she said
In the mean time, Anambra Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muktari Ibrahim said he and other senior police officers had relocated to Onitsha to beef up security and build confidence among the residents.
He debunked insinuation that the suspect was a Hausa, which ignited the anger of youths.
“A policeman is a policeman, no matter where he comes from or whatever his religion is.”
Ibrahim appealed to residents and the Hausa community who fled to neighboring Asaba, Delta State, to return to their homes and business places.
“Normalcy has returned and we are on top of the situation.”
The suspect, Ojana who hails from Agila in Benue State, was attached to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) 52, Onitsha.
