Mechanic In Court For Aborting Girlfriend’s Pregnancy

The Police on Monday arraigned a 25-year-old mechanic, Idris Oke, before an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court for aborting his girlfriend’s pregnancy.

Oke, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike, was charged with conspiracy and aborting the pregnancy of one Miss Janet Onah.

The police prosecutor, Mr Philips Akogwu, told the court that on Feb. 21, Onah, a resident of Kuruduma village, Abuja, reported the case at Asokoro Police Station.

He said the accused and a pharmacist deceitfully administered some drugs to Onah which led to her miscarriage on Feb. 18.

“The pharmacist administered some drugs to her on the pretence that it would make her sleep,’’ Akogwu said.

Akogwu informed the court that Onah had since been on admission at the National Hospital due to the effect of the drugs.

He told the court that the offence contravened Sections 79 and 232 of the Penal Code but the accused pleaded not guilty.

He, however, admitted that he took Onah to a pharmacist in Lugbe with her consent.

“Onah was the person who begged me to take her to the pharmacist to get some drugs that would abort the pregnancy because she was a student and did not want the pregnancy to hinder her studies,’’ he said.

Following his plea, the chief magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case to March 26 for hearing. (NAN)
