Reps Mull Financial Autonomy For LGs

Wide ranging debates in the House of Representatives yesterday pushed for greater financial autonomy for Local Government Authorities (LGAs) as federal lawmakers insisted that such autonomy would spur accelerated development of rural areas.

The resolution followed debates on a bill sponsored by Hon. Mohammed Abdullahi, seeking to alter the provisions of the 1999 Constitution to ensure efficient operations of the local government councils in Nigeria for social, economic and political development

Meanwhile, as controversy on the newly introduced vehicle number plates rages, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal yesterday inaugurated an eight-man adhoc committee to investigate of the proliferation of fake number plates recorded across the country.

The adhoc committee, which will be chaired by the House Deputy Minority Whip, Samson Osagie, was given four weeks to conduct an investigative hearing into the production, issuance and circulation of the fake number plates and then report to the House.
