NJC’s Appointment Will Not Guarantee Autonomy – Rep

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Jerry Manwe, says the proposal that the National Judicial Council (NJC) be given the role of appointing the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not automatically translate to the autonomy of the election management body.

Also, the call for the convening of Sovereign National Conference (SNC) was further punctured by the federal lawmaker who argued that such idea is parallel with constitutional legislative duties.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND, Manwe (PDP/Taraba) took a swipe at proponents of the SNC, accusing them of seeking to score cheap political ends. “I see proponents of the SNC as some people who have lost out and are trying to come back in a way, otherwise I don’t see any reason for that.

Where were they before the elections? They would have come out with the SNC proposal before we went for the election. Now that election have been concluded and has been adjudged to be free and fair, they are now coming out to say we should convene a Sovereign National Conference,” He queried.
