FRSC Attributes Road Accidents To Drug Use

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has attributed road accidents to the misuse of various drugs by road users.

The commission made this disclosure yesterday at the launching of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Drug Abuse Sensitization campaign for road transport employees and workers in Abuja.

?The representative of the Corps Marshal, FRSC,Osita Chidoka,? Mr Adeyemi Omidike, explained that once the road workers take these drugs, it reduces every metabolism in their bodies, leading to road crashes.

According to him, the campaign had to be taken to other motor parks to let motorists know the dangers inherent in these drug stimulants.

In his remarks, the Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii noted that the essence of drug abuse enlightenment programmes was to prevent risk behaviours.

According to him, a driver on long journey who aided himself with drugs to remain alert throughout his journey against the will of nature exposes his passengers and himself to serious risks.

?He disclosed that the continued use of these addictive products would damage the liver, kidney, sensory organs and the eyes.

“You will therefore agree with me that if something is not done urgently to stem this terrible trend, we will have a disaster on our hands with the attendant consequences on the health of our people, both young and old, which will in turn grossly affect the socio- economic well- being of the nation,” he added.
