The scarcity of aviation fuel also called JET AI which started penultimate week has persisted causing airlines to cancel, delay or reschedule their flights.
The scarcity and high price of the product has been a source of concern to airlines and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), as it affects the bottom-line of indigenous airlines.
Though airlines have not yet increased their fares,an airline official who did not want to be named said that this might eventually be the only option available to them since the scarcity and high cost of the product was eroding any profits the airlines were making from their operations.
Last week, at the two domestic airport terminals, passengers had a hectic time getting flights out of Lagos and into Lagos.
Also, many flights were cancelled at airports across the country as airlines could not meet up with their scheduled flights as a result of the scarcity.
The airline official said the situation would? likely continue unless something drastic was done to improve the situation.
Currently, only one marketer has the right from Petroleum Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPRA) to import aviation fuel into the country. The marketer imports and distributes to other marketers.
Dana Airline Communications Manager, Mr. Tony Usidaimen, who confirmed? the scarcity, said Dana Air had either delayed or rescheduled its flights due to the scarcity of aviation fuel.
Currently, aviation fuel sells for between N182 and N186 per litre depending on the place of purchase.
