N50bn Lost To Fire Disasters In 2010 – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that over N50billion worth of property? was lost to fire? incidence in 22 states of the federation in 2010 while the report of 2011 is still awaited.

Similarly, no fewer than 23 states of the federation were affected by floods in 2010, while a total of about 1,555 people were also killed by various disaster same year.

The agency’s coordinator? for Abuja Operations Office, Mr. Ishaya Chinoko, stated this yesterday at the occasion for the inauguration of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) clubs held at the premises of Government Secondary School, Minna, Niger State.

He described DRR as a concept and practice championed? by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) to reduce or eliminate the harm that may come from disasters by addressing? the causes, and the campaign were being taken to schools.

He said, “Disaster risk education and safe school buildings are two key priority areas for action outlined in the Hydro Framework for Action 2005-2015:Building Resilience of Nations and Conference on Disaster Reduction in January 2005 to which UNISDR is spear -heading.”

He said the objective was? to educate the students and pupils to a point where they can become agents of prevention? and to manage basic emergencies? like fire, flood, epidemics, windstorm, among others by providing basic First Aids to victims of domestic and road accidents.
