FG Tasks Universities Over Funding

The Federal Government has said that it can no longer effectively fund tertiary Institutions in the Nation as it advised that institutions should source for funds by attracting investors to develop the education sector.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said this yesterday in Abuja at the Annual Fund Raising Dinner organised by the University of Jos , which was aimed at generating funds from its alumnus’, friends and well wishers for the development of the University.

Senator Anyim applauded the School, which is his alumni stating that “University of Jos is the very first university in the nation to embark on sourcing of funds to augment the funds from the government, which is scarcely enough for the development of education in the nation”.

‘The launch of annual fund is to augment the funds from the government to develop education. It is obvious that government can no longer effectively fund tertiary institutions’’

According to him, this development has led to the inauguration of a committee by the federal government to access the nation’s tertiary institutions in order to ascertain the level of decay and needs in the schools, in order to prompt government’s response on what he described as ‘Assess Need Bases.

The SGF condemned the attitudes of some management members of the universities that see themselves as political appointees, who are only after what they can get at the expense of the institutions. “It is an error to source funds for others to manage; that era is gone. University managements should invest in Hostel development either in partnership with the private sectors”, he counseled.
