Following recent reports of abduction from commercial vehicles, the Zamfara Government has banned all illegal motor parts in the state, the Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Nasiru Zarumai, said.
Zarumai told the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Tuesday that the government was disturbed by the level of insecurity resulting from the operations of illegal motor parks.
?“We are aware of the current security situation in the country, which has called for serious caution and strict monitoring of passenger movement across the state.
“So, the government has made it mandatory that only officially recognised motor parks are allowed to load or drop passengers throughout the state,” he said
The commissioner said the government was planning to enact a law that would spell out punishments for violators of the ban on illegal motor park operation.
To ensure compliance with the new directives, Zarumai said that a committee had been set up to check the operations of illegal motor parks across the stat
The committee, which is headed by the commissioner for transport, has representatives of the Police, Federal Road Safety Commission, Hisbah, National Union of Road Transport Workers, National Association of Road Transport Owners, among others.
He said that the committee had embarked on an enlightenment campaign to sensitise commercial motor drivers and passengers on the need to comply with the new policy for the safety of lives and property.
Zarumaisaid the new measure would help in fortifying national security by ensuring that passengers were properly screened before the commencement of journeys from motor parks in the state.
