National Assembly Directs Joint Committees To Probe Crash

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has directed joint committees on aviation of the National Assembly to ascertain the air worthiness of all other operating aircraft in the country and make appropriate recommendations.

In what federal lawmakers described as an “economic regulatory failure” in Nigeria’s aviation sector, wide ranging reactions on Tuesday expressed outrage over Sunday’s fatal Dana plane crash that claimed 153 lives of passengers on a scheduled trip from Abuja to Lagos.

At yesterday’s plenary of the House of Representatives, the Lower House committee chair on Aviation, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha spoke under matters of urgent national importance when she called for stricter enforcement of all aviation-related laws and regulation of the sector.

Meanwhile, a meeting between the John Enoh-led Lower House Committee on Appropriation and the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala over the implementation of the 2012 budget was shelved in respect for President Goodluck Jonathan’s announcement of a three-day mourning period for victims of the plane crash.
