Senate Slams MDA’s Over Federal Character

The Senate, yesterday, said that Ministries, Departments and Agencies abuse the federal character principle in the recruitment of staff.

Senate Chairman on Federal Character, Sen. Awaisu Kuta, who stated this when he briefed newsmen on the activities of his committee in the past year, decried the failure of MDAs to adhere to the principle.

Sen. Kuta said, “We have received many petitions and we always preach to the heads of departments that time has come for us to keep sentiments aside.

It is awful and old fashioned to find that in an organisation where the head of department is coming from a particular area you will realise that from top to bottom three quarters of the appointments come from that particular area.

We want to discourage these and there are laws that established the FCC where you have in those laws provisions for punishments for anybody who does not comply with the Federal Character Principle. I say this with a lot of pain.”
