Akwa Ibom Council Polls: Eket DPO Orders Assault Of Journalists

?Two journalists covering the council polls in Eket , Southern Akwa Ibom, were on Saturday brutalised by the Police at the Eket Office of Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC)?

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Eket Mr Idowu Owohunwa ordered his men to deal with the journalists after a brief discussion.?

The policemen swiftly descended on the reporters and left them with serious injuries after the beating.?

The victims, a District Correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria and Editor of News Net an Akwa Ibom based tabloid.

?The Journalists lost various valuables including a digital camera in the incident.?

The reporters were declined attention at the Divisional Police Headquarters when they approached policemen on duty to make a formal report of the incident.?

The policemen said that they had instructions from the DPO not to receive such reports.?

A team of reporters led by Akwa Ibom Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists Mr Joe Effiong and Vice Chairman Mrs. Florence Umoetuk visited the Eket Police station to see the brutalised colleagues.(NAN)
