President Jonathan Commended On Population Control

Mr Ibrahim Kawule, a consultant on demographic studies on Wednesday commended the pronouncement by President Goodluck Jonathan on population control.

Kawule, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Clarity Media Service made this known at a news conference in Abuja.

He said that no nation could experience growth with over bloated and uncontrolled population.

He cited the example of China and India that had put regulatory measures on its population explosion to avert national disaster.

It would be recalled that President Jonathan at the swearing in of the newly appointed Chairman and members of the of National Population Commission (NPC) on Tuesday decried the rapid population growth in the country.

The President also asked Nigerians to brace up for legislation on birth control to check population explosion.

“For us to plan properly we must manage our population, we must begin to think about how well to manage it,’’ he said.

Kawule commended the choice of Mr Festus Odumegwu as the new helmsman of NPC, saying his experience as a successful corporate manager in Nigerian Breweries puts him in a good stead.

He noted that the presidential marching order given to the new boss of NPC to complete the issuance of national identity card to all Nigerians before 2015 was the best way to check insecurity posed by Boko Haram.

He said that a situation whereby one could not identify who was a true Nigerian as a result of its porous borders should be urgently addressed.

Kawule called on the newly appointed NPC chairman to fulfil the mandate of social re-engineering by producing adequate data on population and accurate census.

He said that this was in line with the transformation agenda of President Jonathan.
