Unity, Passion Lead To Success — Mourinho

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has admitted that he finds it difficult to explain exactly why he has enjoyed such remarkable success during his career, joking that he is “not even the boss at home”, so he has no idea how he manages to run a club.

After winning domestic league titles in three different countries, as well as two Champions Leagues with two different clubs, the Portuguese last season ended Barcelona’s three-year reign as the champions of Spain.

His achievements have resulted in him being described as the world’s greatest coach but he insists that there is no great mystery as to what he is doing, arguing that everything he has achieved can be attributed to a collective adherence to the basic principle of honest endeavour.

“I’m not even the boss at home – that’s my wife – so how am I supposed to run my club?” the former Chelsea manager joked during a speech at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

“When everyone grows in the same direction and I can see they are doing so, I’m very happy and everything is much easier.

“It is hard to explain the reason for our success; I have been asked it many times throughout my life, especially by the press.

“Quality, unity, passion, work methods: there is not just one or two reasons. There are a lot of factors and they must work in unison.”

Mourinho took charge of Madrid in the summer of 2010, fresh from his treble-winning campaign with Inter, and led Los Blancos to the Copa del Rey in his first season at the helm before claiming the Liga title last term with a record points haul.
