CAN Slams ACF Over Comment On State Creation

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), yesterday, slammed the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) over its comment on state creation in the ongoing constitutional review by the National Assembly.

The ACF had in its memorandum told the National Assembly to concentrate on issues that? promote national unity rather that creating additional states in its ongoing constitutional review, and said “the problems of Nigeria have nothing to do? with the constitution but with those who execute it.”

Reacting to the statement, the CAN in the northern states described the statement as “selfish and anti-people.”

The Public Relations Officer of CAN, Elder Sunday Oibe, who made the intention of the Christian community in the north known while speaking to LEADERSHIP said, “we do not subscribe to that position, because it is selfish and ungodly to us as Christians in the north.”

According to CAN “the selfish interest of the ACF does not reflect the opinion of the majority of the people of the north.”

“We were not consulted by the ACF. The Christians in the north want more states to be created. This is because, the more states you have, the closer government is to the people.

“No right thinking man will oppose the creation of new states. Those who are opposing state creation want to have dominance over some people,” CAN? added.

The religious body said, “We, the northern Christians are moving a step further to even say that every geo-political zone in this country should have equal number of states in order to ensure fairness.”

?“We do not subscribe to that position by ACF; we are calling on the National Assembly to ensure that more states are created, which is the only service they can do to their people.

?“The ACF cannot speak for the north; neither can they speak for the Christians in the north. They are on their own.”
